What We're Looking Forward to This Winter in the North Country

Winter in the North County is one of our favorite seasons, a time when falling snow means new adventures, and hot cocoa is an everyday kind of treat. This winter, we're looking forward to getting back out on our skis, and the return of our favorite annual festivals like the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. How will you spend your winter in the North Country?

Ice Castles & the Return of Winter Festivals
Anyone who lives in the North Country knows that winter is carnival season. Every year, ice castles and sporting competitions help us beat winter blues and keep cabin fever at bay. This year, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival returns from February 4-13, 2022 with the theme "Totally 80s," lending inspiration for floats, costumes, and entertainment. The crown jewel of the carnival, the Ice Castle, will return as well. Beyond Saranac Lake, ice fishing derbies, sports competitions, and more are back on the roster, so be sure to check out your North Country community's festivities.

Alpine Skiing
One of our favorite North Country winter traditions is alpine skiing. Heading out to ski at Titus Mountain or Pisgah after work or meeting up with friends and family for a day on the slopes makes winter so much fun. Whether you're a first-timer learning how to ski, or you've been doing it your whole life, a day on the slopes is always a recipe for a good time in the North Country.

Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing
Whether you're going for a quick ski to get some exercise in at Dewey Mountain Recreation Center in Saranac Lake or taking a backcountry trek into the Five Ponds Wilderness Area in Wanakena, the North Country's Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are second to none as far as we're concerned. Find quiet trails ideal for glimpsing winter wildlife, as well bustling Nordic ski centers offer instruction and gear rentals.

Snowmobiling
St. Lawrence County alone boasts more than 700 miles of groomed snowmobiling trails, and much of the trail network connects South Colton to the Cranberry Lake area in the Adirondack Park. One of the coolest things about snowmobiling in the North Country, besides the inter-connectivity of the region's trails with the state-wide trail network, is that there are restaurants, gas stations, and taverns located along several trails. What's better than a day of sledding in beautiful boreal forests?
